Have a peek with us into the mind of one of the leads of our company and their insight in mentoring during Januarys Mentoring Month.
Today on the International Day of Mentoring at F,J&B LTD, we have an exclusive interview with Felix Bowerman. Enjoy!
First question, as a mentor, what advice would you give that applies most to learning?
Felix: I would say the key to learning is really to enjoy the thing you are learning. If you are more engaged with the subject matter everything gets easier from that point. A part of this is whether you have a genuine interest in what you are doing. The other part is the Mentor being able to share it in a way that appeals to the individuals method of learning
How would you recommend a mentee to seek out the help of a mentor & what do you think should they look for?
Felix: You are not giving me the easy questions today! Everyone is different so will have different levels of success with different Mentors. Perhaps that’s my first piece of advice. People have different backgrounds and therefore will offer different opinions and solutions to challenges. Don’t limit yourself to one Mentor if you have the opportunity for several
How has mentoring impacted you & why do you think it’s important to give back as a mentor to others?
Felix: Well, you have to understand that a lot of my development was through the help of others mentoring me. So it gives me great joy that I am in a position to offer the same help and advice to others on a similar path. Everything changes – and engineering is no different – so we have to encourage the younger generation to seek out change in order to strive for continuous improvement within the Built Environment
Lastly, what advice would you give to people considering mentoring others?
Felix: If you have the opportunity I would urge you to take the time to do so. Be patient and use it as a way to develop your own communication skills and understanding. After all it’s a 2 way street and you might just find you learn a thing or two yourself!
Thank You so much for your time and answers Felix! We hope you enjoyed this little titbit, share your mentoring story & let us know why you joined the movement at: https://bit.ly/3m75Duq
